About this role

About the Team

The AI Deployment Engineering team is responsible for helping developers and enterprises safely and effectively deploy OpenAI technologies in production. The team works as a trusted technical partner to customers, moving them from experimentation to durable AI applications with clear technical patterns, responsible deployment practices, and measurable business outcomes.

The Cybersecurity Specialists team sits within AI Deployment Engineering and focuses on helping organizations adopt OpenAI technologies across security-critical workflows. The team partners with CISOs, application security leaders, SOC teams, security engineering teams, and technical executives to understand current security posture, identify high-impact AI use cases, and deploy solutions that help customers detect risk, secure software, investigate threats, and operationalize AI responsibly.

About the Role

OpenAI is seeking an experienced technical leader to build and lead a team of Cybersecurity Specialists within AI Deployment Engineering. This leader will manage specialists who work hands-on with customer security teams to assess security posture, design AI-enabled security workflows, guide safe deployment, and establish scalable patterns for AI-powered security operations.

This is both a people leadership role and a senior technical advisory role. You will define how OpenAI engages strategic cybersecurity customers at scale, coach cyber specialists and architects, shape customer prioritization, and ensure consistent execution across complex security deployments. You will partner closely with Sales, Product, Research, Security, Applied Engineering, Legal, and GTM to translate customer needs into deployment best practices, security patterns, and product insights.

In this role, you will:

  • Create, hire, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of cyber deployment specialists supporting strategic customers.
  • Own the operating model for the Cybersecurity Specialists function, from discovery and posture assessment through validated pilots and production adoption.
  • Help customers identify high-impact OpenAI use cases across vulnerability management, secure code review, application security testing, threat investigation, incident response, SOC operations, and security governance.
  • Guide cyber specialists and customer security teams in designing AI-enhanced workflows, automations, evals, and scalable deployment architectures.
  • Serve as the senior technical escalation point for complex customer implementations, security-sensitive deployments, and executive customer conversations.
  • Partner with Sales, Product, Research, Security, Applied Engineering, Legal, and GTM to align customer outcomes with roadmap priorities and responsible deployment standards.
  • Establish repeatable deployment playbooks, lighthouse customer patterns, reference architectures, benchmarks, and field-ready best practices.
  • Synthesize customer deployment insights into actionable feedback for internal teams.
  • Champion safe, reliable, and effective adoption of AI-powered security workflows across industries.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 10+ years of experience in security-related, technical, customer-facing roles such as security architecture, solutions architecture, cyber advisory, technical consulting, deployment engineering, post-sales engineering, or professional services.
  • Have 4+ years of experience leading technical teams, including hiring, mentoring, and developing cyber specialists, security architects, or similarly senior technical talent.
  • Bring deep cybersecurity domain expertise across one or more areas such as application security, cloud security, vulnerability management, threat detection and response, secure software development, security operations, or security architecture.
  • Have deployed generative AI, developer platforms, security platforms, or cloud-based software solutions into production environments at large companies.
  • Can reason credibly through modern security workflows such as penetration testing, AppSec, GRC, threat intelligence, threat hunting, red teaming, secure code review, and remediation.
  • Are comfortable advising CISOs, CTOs, security executives, engineering leaders, and highly technical practitioners.
  • Can translate complex technical, security, and business topics into clear decisions, practical guidance, and customer-facing recommendations.
  • Balance speed, customer impact, security, reliability, governance, and safe adoption in ambiguous environments.

Success in this role looks like:

  • A strong Cybersecurity Specialists team hired, ramped, and operating with clear engagement standards and prioritization mechanisms.
  • Strategic cyber customers moving from early exploration to validated pilots, production deployments, and measurable security outcomes.
  • Measurable customer outcomes such as faster threat investigation, improved vulnerability discovery, reduced manual review burden, stronger AppSec workflows, or clearer security posture visibility.
  • Repeatable cybersecurity deployment patterns, evals, reference architectures, workshops, lighthouse customer assets, and partner-ready playbooks adopted across the broader field.
  • Strong Product, Research, and Security feedback loops informed by real-world customer needs, deployment blockers, and emerging cyber use cases.
  • Trusted executive relationships with CISOs and senior security leaders across priority accounts.
