Staff Software Engineer, Platform - FinEng
We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join the Financial Engineering team within Platform and own the architecture and long-term technical strategy for the financial data and reporting systems that power Coinbase's financial operations. Financial Engineering partners with Finance, Accounting, Tax, and other Platform teams to ensure every dollar and coin that moves through Coinbase is tracked accurately, reported on time, and fully auditable. You'll define and drive the foundational backend systems at the intersection of engineering rigor and financial precision, building infrastructure that scales with Coinbase's growth across crypto, fiat, and new verticals.
What you'll do:
- Own the multi-year technical strategy and architecture for Coinbase's financial data pipelines, reporting systems, and operational infrastructure, defining how these systems scale across entities, currencies, and product lines.
- Drive the design and delivery of new backend services in Golang, applying modern cloud technology and setting engineering standards that solve novel financial engineering problems at increasing scale.
- Lead high-stakes initiatives to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and auditability of financial data, proactively identifying systemic risks and architecting resilient solutions before issues arise.
- Partner cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, Tax, Compliance, and other Platform teams to translate complex financial and regulatory requirements into scalable, well-tested technical solutions.
- Shape the team's technical culture by mentoring senior engineers, leading design reviews, and establishing architectural patterns and coding standards that elevate the bar across Financial Engineering.
Required Skills and Experience:
- 8+ years of backend software development experience, including designing, building, and scaling large-scale distributed systems in production with a strong understanding of service-oriented architecture.
- Led platform-building efforts that transformed fragmented services into coherent, reusable systems (e.g., shared frameworks, unified APIs, multi-tenant architectures) within financial or transactional domains.
- Deep expertise in Go (or similar backend languages) with proven ability to architect fault-tolerant, highly reliable systems handling high-volume financial data across multiple entities and currencies.
- Track record of setting technical direction across teams, influencing roadmaps, and driving alignment with both technical and non-technical stakeholders through staff-level architecture forums.
- Proven ability to translate complex financial, accounting, or compliance requirements into well-structured, maintainable systems that operate with precision at scale.
- Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
